The breeding and seed production research department started working almost simultaneously with the establishment of Yazd Province Agricultural Research Center, that is, in 1363 with 5 personnel (one expert, two technicians and two gardeners). Currently, this department is in a building with an area of 450 square meters and with 14 personnel, including two faculty members, 5 research experts, 3 technicians and expert assistants, and 4 service personnel in five sub-departments of Gene Bank. Horticulture, grain, fodder and registration and certificate. The seeds are active. The main description of the duties of this department is as follows.:
- Implementation of research projects in order to obtain new cultivars of agricultural plants and fruit trees with climatic conditions and the needs of the region.
- Implementation of research projects in order to determine the agricultural needs of plants
- Carrying out research projects to determine the resistance of different cultivars of agricultural plants and fruit trees to salinity, drought and other adverse weather conditions.
- Doing things related to maintaining and controlling the quality and purity of seeds
- Cooperation in the implementation of national research projects
So far, the breeding and seed production research department has conducted more than 120 research projects on major agricultural and horticultural crops (wheat, barley, alfalfa, sorghum, pomegranate, almonds, pistachios and dates) and 33 projects in the 83-84 crop year. The approval is in progress. This department is responsible for the center's research station. Also, the seed laboratory of Bojari unit of this department is also active with relatively good facilities.Among the main activities of this department are the production of breeding seeds 1, 2 and 3 and sending the breeding seeds 2 and 3 of some varieties to other research centers of the provinces and monitoring the procurement, production and processing of mother and certified wheat and barley seeds in the province. In the current crop year, in addition to the production of about 2000 tons of certified and maternal seeds, this department has also supervised the production of 35 tons of cultivated wheat and barley seeds
